Senior Citizen Tax Exemption
MEASURE A Senior Citizen Tax Exemption for Tax Year 2017-18
On May 2, 2017, the registered voters within the Hayward Unified School District approved Measure A, an annual special tax for $88 per year for 12 years. Measure A offers an exemption to property owners 65 years or older, who own and occupy their property as the principal place of residence.
If you are currently receiving an exemption for the previous special parcel tax, Measure G, you will receive a postcard from the district soon confirming that, and informing you that your exemption will be transferred from Measure G to Measure A. There is no need to re-apply if you continue to own and occupy the exempt property as your principal place of residence.
To qualify for the Senior Exemptions from the Parcel Tax, you must: 1) turn 65 years old prior to July 1,
2017; and, 2) own and occupy your property as your primary residence.
An exemption application from a qualified applicant will provide an exemption for that tax year only.
However, qualified applicants will not be required to resubmit their exemption application for future tax
years provided 1) the property was exempt in the immediately previous tax year, and 2) they continue to
own and occupy the property. On an annual basis, the District will verify and renew existing exemptions
and, if necessary, confirm with the original applicant that they continue to own and occupy the property.
