New Trustee Joins HUSD Board
The Hayward Unified School District Board of Education has welcomed a new trustee and marked the return of two current trustees for the next four-year term.
Austin Bruckner Carrillo joins the board as a newly elected trustee. Peter Bufete and Sara Prada return to the board following re-election.
At the board’s December organizational meeting, the board voted to return Trustees Bufete and Prada to their roles as president and vice president of the board, respectively. Trustees chose Bruckner Carrillo as the new board clerk.
Trustee Bruckner Carrillo's election to the board marks a significant milestone in his lifelong dedication to community service and advocacy.
Overcoming a challenging upbringing shaped by eviction, homelessness, abuse, and addiction in his family, he found stability and inspiration through the support of his adoptive grandparents, teachers, and community.
Having called Hayward home for nearly a decade, Trustee Bruckner Carrillo has worked to promote equity and empower underrepresented voices. He brings over a decade of experience working across city, county, and state government, along with vital collaborations with nonprofits, supporting survivors, and advocating for marginalized communities. As the former Chair of Hayward’s Community Services Commission, he spearheaded initiatives to improve grant accessibility and advance public safety reforms.
A proud union member, grassroots organizer, and LGBTQ+ advocate, he also leads a countywide nonprofit and serves on the board of the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club.
Trustee Bruckner Carrillo replaces outgoing Trustee Joe Ramos.
