Hayward Unified School District

Hayward Unified School District

  • The wildfires in Northern California continue to impact the Bay Area’s air quality and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has extended their Spare the Air Alert through Friday, November 16. However, during this poor air quality advisory, we recognize that the air quality level is changing each day. The district is following school guidelines regarding air quality provided by the Environmental Protection Agency. Those guidelines indicate the following for our current “unhealthy for sensitive group” level (orange):

    • It’s OK to be active outside, especially for short activities such as recess and physical education (PE).

    • For longer activities such as athletic practice, take more breaks and do less intense activities. Outdoor games may resume as long as these protocols are followed.

    • Watch for symptoms and take action as needed.

    • Students with asthma should follow their asthma action plans and keep their quick-relief medicine handy.

Site leaders have been asked to provide an indoor option for students that may be experiencing health issues as a result of the poor air quality. The district will continue to monitor the air quality and provide further guidance if changes are needed.
