Dear HUSD Community,

Before spring break, the district announced a target date of April 25 to move from requiring masks in indoor spaces to strongly recommending them. We shared that this change would be dependent on our local conditions after spring break. I am pleased to report that Covid case rates have remained relatively low in Hayward and in our district. Thus, beginning April 25, we will no longer be requiring masks indoors at schools and offices.

Based on county health data, Covid cases in the city of Hayward have remained stable and relatively low over the last month. According to the Alameda County Public Health Department, they have only seen a gradual increase in reported cases over the past month in the county and the data is not alarming. Prior to spring break, the district provided all students and staff with take home Covid tests. We asked that students and employees take a test prior to returning to school and to report positive results by Sunday evening. We saw only a modest number of new cases by the end of Sunday, and our numbers continue to remain low. 

While we will not be requiring that masks are worn indoors, we strongly believe that masks can help prevent the community spread of Covid. Although it is a personal choice, we will continue to recommend the use of masks in indoor spaces. 

The last two years of this pandemic have required incredible resilience and compromise in a community with many differing viewpoints and lived experiences. The health and safety of our students, employees, and family members has been possible only because we have all worked together to help stem the spread of this virus. Our currently low case numbers are a testament to our caution, continued hard work, and diligence, and we should all be grateful for that. 

But I also know that each new turn in this health crisis brings with it new questions and, for some, new anxieties. I urge us to continue to display our Hayward spirit with the same concern, respect, and consideration for each other that we have shown over the past two years.

Antes de las vacaciones de primavera, el distrito anunció la fecha del 25 de abril para pasar de exigir cubrebocas en espacios interiores a recomendar encarecidamente el uso. Compartimos que este cambio dependería de nuestras condiciones locales después de las vacaciones de primavera. Me complace informar que las tasas de casos de Covid se han mantenido relativamente bajas en Hayward y en nuestro distrito. Por lo tanto, a partir del 25 de abril, ya no exigiremos cubrebocas en los espacios interiores de las escuelas y las oficinas.

Basado en datos de salud del condado, los casos de Covid en la ciudad de Hayward se han mantenido estables y relativamente bajos durante el último mes. Según el Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de Alameda, sólo han visto un aumento gradual de los casos reportados durante el último mes en el condado y los datos no son alarmantes. Los dos últimos años de esta pandemia han requerido una increíble resistencia y compromiso en una comunidad con muchos puntos de vista y experiencias vividas diferentes. La salud y la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, empleados y familiares ha sido posible sólo porque todos hemos trabajado juntos para ayudar a detener la propagación de este virus. El bajo número de casos que tenemos en la actualidad es un testimonio de nuestra cautela, trabajo duro y diligencia, y todos deberíamos estar agradecidos por ello.

Pero también sé que cada nuevo giro en esta crisis sanitaria trae consigo nuevas preguntas y, para algunos, nuevas ansiedades. Les urjo a seguir mostrando nuestro espíritu de Hayward con la misma preocupación, respeto y consideración por los demás que hemos mostrado en los dos últimos años.
