Name, Gender and/or Pronoun Change

Why might a student want to change their name, gender and/or pronouns?

There are many reasons why a student may want or need to change their name. Sometimes a student experiences a change in family status through adoption, marriage or divorce. Sometimes a student may want to update their name, gender and/or pronouns to align with their gender identity. All students have the right to assert their authentic name and pronouns to be used at school in alignment with their gender identity and be affirmed and supported by the HUSD community to do so. The student's rights and all options for name change listed below are protected by California law and HUSD Board Policy [CA Ed Code 221.5; BP 5145.9; AR 5145.3].

Overview of Name/Gender Change Choices

At School Only - Any student (TK-12) may change their name and/or pronouns that are used at school and in the classroom. Data systems do not change. Their name and pronouns can be noted on sub rosters. How to make this change - Student speaks to a HUSD Counselor, Principal, Assistant Principal, Youth Intervention Specialist or Teacher.

Preferred Name/Gender Change - Any student (TK-12) or parent/legal guardian may request a preferred name and/or gender change on all unofficial records. Preferred name and gender will be visible on Infinite Campus, and legal name/gender will remain hidden and attached to student's official record. All unofficial documents may be updated with preferred name/gender. This is a simple option for affirming parents to help support their child. How to make this change - Student or parent/legal guardian complete a simple form.

Legal Name/Gender Change - A student's name and/or gender may be changed on all unofficial and official records. How to make this change - Parent/legal guardian or student (age 18+) complete a simple form and provide a legal/court document.
