Dear HUSD Families,
I hope this message finds you well. As we prepare for a new presidential administration, we know some students, families, and staff members are worried. Let me assure you: HUSD is 100 percent committed to serving every student, no matter their immigration status. We are committed to maintaining our schools as safe and welcoming environments for all students and families.
We want our families to be informed and feel safe in sending their children to school.
Sharing information: We do not disclose information that might indicate a student’s or family’s citizenship or immigration status without your permission, unless the information is for a legitimate educational purpose or is in response to a court order or subpoena.
Access to School Grounds: We do not allow ICE to visit a school site without permission from the Superintendent’s office.
We will also be scheduling online information sessions for families to learn more about family rights and our commitment to protecting them.
Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of every child and family in our care. By staying informed and proactive, we will support our community through this challenging time.
Thank you,
Jason Reimann

Gracias,
Jason Reimann

Dear HUSD Community,
Hayward Unified is one of the most diverse school districts in the Bay Area in one of the most diverse cities in the country. Our families speak more than 40 languages, and about 30 percent of our students are English learners. We celebrate our diversity and the rich languages and cultural assets that our communities bring to the district. In these uncertain times, I want to promise every family that you are welcomed at HUSD and that all students and family members will be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
During this year’s presidential campaign, immigration emerged as a top issue. Promises were made to deport large numbers of undocumented immigrants, increase the enforcement of immigration laws, and make it more difficult for the children of immigrant parents to achieve citizenship. As we transition to a new administration, this may raise questions about the laws and procedures affecting undocumented students or families in our school community.
I want to affirm to the HUSD community that—as required under federal law—we are committed to providing all students access to a safe, supportive and whole learning experience. The district does not ask about the immigration status of students or their families. We protect and do not disclose confidential or personally identifiable information about our students or families.
Likewise, the City of Hayward has declared itself a Sanctuary City. The Hayward Police Department prohibits its officers from enforcing civil immigration laws or assisting any agency in immigration activities, except when it involves non-immigration related criminal offenses. Also, the police department does not participate in immigration checkpoints or civil immigration operations, and does not attempt to determine immigration status when someone asks for help or reports a crime.
The rich culture that our schools and community enjoy is due, in large part, to the inclusion of families and students from throughout the nation and across the world. Every student and family is valuable and adds to our schools and community.
I hope that you have a safe and restful Veteran’s Day weekend.
In community,
Superintendent Jason Reimann
