World House
The World House program, housed at Cesar Chavez Middle School and Tennyson High School, is uniquely designed for students in grades 7-12 who are Multilingual Learners and are new to the United States. The program welcomes students from across the globe who speak multiple languages.
Tailored Courses
Both World House campuses provide Designated English Language Development (ELD) for a wide range of proficiency levels, beginning with ELD Fundamentals: a course specially created for students with interrupted schooling in their home country, and culminating with ELD 3: a college-preparatory (high school only) course meeting rigorous ELD and English Language Arts standards.
Primary Language Support
Our World House program employs several Bilingual Instructional Assistants (BIAs), who are qualified to provide translations for students in their core content classes (depending on availability). In addition, core content courses, including Science, Math, and History, are available in Spanish for Spanish-speaking students at both World House campuses.
Community Partnerships
In addition to the services offered at the HUSD HUB Parent Resource Center for newcomer families, World House sites offer community health and legal services through Tiburcio Vazquez, La Familia, and Centro Legal, as well as a soccer program for participating students through Soccer Without Borders.
Transportation
Families who opt to place their students into the World House program may qualify for district-provided transportation if they live outside the Cesar Chavez or Tennyson boundary. District school buses will pick students up from their home school (i.e. Bret Harte, M.L. King, Ochoa, Winton, Hayward High, or Mt. Eden) in the morning and return them in the afternoon. Check in with your site's EL Specialist to find out more about how to request transportation.
