What is a Promise Neighborhood?
Inspired by the success of the Harlem Children's Zone, President Obama started the Federal Promise Neighborhoods Initiative in 2010, which is both a place and a strategy. It is communities of opportunity that are centered on strong schools where children can learn, grow, and succeed. A Promise Neighborhood provides comprehensive, high-quality educational and social support to ensure the long-term health, safety, and economic well-being of the entire community. Hayward is one of the first five communities nationwide selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive a Promise Neighborhood implementation grant.
