Dear HUSD Family,

At the September 28 Board meeting, the Board of Education appointed me as Interim Superintendent for Hayward Unified School District.  The Board did so recognizing the need for continuity and stability.  (Here is a link to a statement from the Board President.)  In HUSD and throughout Hayward we have been inspired by our Made in Hayward vision that Stan Dobbs and the Board of Education introduced to the community in 2013.  As Interim Superintendent, I am committed to continuing this effort to ensure that all students graduate college and/or career ready, proud to be Made in Hayward.  We have a strong foundation of dedicated staff, a supportive community, and an educational vision that students are academically engaged on a daily basis to learn at high levels.  We will build on this foundation throughout the 2016-17 school year and beyond.

As I assume the role of Interim Superintendent, I also want to assure you that schools and staff will continue to receive the same level of support from the Educational Services Division.  For now, we will not be appointing anyone to the Associate Superintendent of Educational Services position.  We have a strong Educational Services team and we have organized ourselves so that the important work around our educational agenda continues uninterrupted.  And please know that my primary focus will always be supporting the work you do in our schools for our students.  I intend to still be engaged in leading our educational priorities while balancing any additional demands of the Interim Superintendent position.  My e-mail and cell phone number are below.  Always feel free to share any ideas on how we might best move forward together in service of our students.

Thank you for all you do for the Hayward community!

Dear HUSD Community,

March is Women's History Month, and March 8th is International Women's Day.  As you may be aware, advocates are planning to organize a "Day Without Women" movement on March 8th.  We support the First Amendment rights of all of our students, families, and staff.  We also recognize the enormous contribution that women have made to our country, state, and District.  Additionally, education has been an incredible equalizer for women and other members of our society.  For these reasons we ask that  all students and staff attend school on Wednesday March 8th and come together either on that day or during this month to learn about and celebrate women’s history.  Here are some suggested resources and activities for the day or to use during the month that might be done at school or at home:

We are very excited to see our students and staff come together in solidarity this month in support of women!

Dear HUSD Educators,

Today is our official Teacher Appreciation Day in HUSD!  This is an opportunity for the community to demonstrate to you how much you all mean to your students, families, and colleagues.  You may recall that before winter break I shared some reflections in verse.  The work you all do each and every day in Hayward inspired me to do the same for today.  Thank you for everything you do for our Made in Hayward students!  Enjoy your special day!  - Matt

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day!

It’s that time of year where everything’s a rush—

Testing, field trips, report cards all come in a crush.

So it’s nice to take a moment to remind all of you,

About the amazing work here in HUSD that you do.

The students of Hayward are the luckiest around

To have such dedicated teachers whose passions abound

You’re an inspiration for our students as you help them excel;

And what we see each day inspires us as well.

In truth one day is not enough to share our gratitude

And please know that this note is not just a platitude

But a sincere expression of support for all the amazing improvements

That you make each day in the lives of our Made in Hayward students

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day!
